There are many major problems facing modern civilization such as overpopulation, resource drain and climate change. Humans have become so desperate to deal with these problems that they come up with the most ridiculous of solutions that may sound good on paper would either not change anything or make things worse if put into practice. That is why this series of articles is being made, in order to discuss these proposed solutions to major issues and explain why they are wrong. For the first bad idea we will discuss it is none other than the very name sake of the series and that is the plan of the mad titan Thanos.
The reason this series is called as dumb as Thanos’ plan is because his plan is the most famous of these plans. This article will be divided into two sections. The first section will cover the short term effects of the plan being implemented. Since this is the first entry in the series, coupled with the fact that others have already discussed this topic this won’t be as, shall we say original and we will be drawing from other people’s conclusions rather than making our own. Though that is because our goal with this first entry is to give people the general vibe on how this series will go. Without further adieu let us begin.
Almost instantly after Thanos’s snap would occur governments around the world would fall in shambles. Since Thanos said the snap was fair to all groups this would mean half of all government officials would also die and with half the leadership gone the world would go into deep turmoil right after the snap occurred. Nations with stable governments and clear cut lines of succession would wither the storm better while ones with unstable governments and unclear lines of succession would fragment. For the first few years after the snap most of the worlds nations would focus on keeping themselves together and would thus be unable to aid each other in recovery. People would turn to radical political groups in their distress after the snap occurred. Ultimately I think the far right would be the political side to gain the most support right after the snap since many would turn to religion after witnessing millions inexplicably turn to dust and since many far right groups are religious they’d be the ones to gain the most support. There would also be some mass famine because half the crops and livestock would disappear. I would go on but I’d basically be restate what alternative history stated.
Instead I’ll discuss what would happen if Thanos’s plan was carried out realistically and how it would betray the very principles it preaches. Now remember this is a hypothetical scenario I’m not saying this idea will actually be implemented. If Thanos’s plan was implemented in the real world it would instantly betray its principle of being fair to everyone since the people doing the killing(which would either be the government or a paramilitary group) would be exempted from being killed themselves and even if they do kill half of the people doing the killing they’re positions would be filled by someone else thus keeping the organization alive whether it be a paramilitary group or government. This flies right in the face of all of Thanos’s claims about fairness. The reaction by the population after an action like this being carried out would be utter disgust and outraged.
In summation, no matter which way you look at it the immediate effects of the snap would only cause chaos and pandemonium and things will only get worse from there.
Since half the trees would be snapped away global warming would occur much faster and the nations of the world would be too busy trying to keep themselves together to deal with climate change. This will result in even more death and pandemonium and ultimately the snap would make things worse for everyone.
However that was discussing a scenario where the snap happened the way it did in the movie. Know most of the advocates for Thanos’ plan as displayed earlier don’t really think of other variables when they envision Thanos’ plan being carried out so ai don’t think they’d bother to eliminate half the plant life so I’ll discuss a scenario where only half of human and animal life is killed. In the years following the killing of half of the world populous the survivors would be in shock and turn to radical movements. Know if the government carried out the process the populous after overthrowing it would likely turn to libertarianism since it was an ideology which promoted limited government though this might cause some nations to fracture. If the massacre was carried by a paramilitary group the opposite would happen and people would turn to more statist ideologies. However this is exclusive to the left and or right wing and different parts of the world would be ruled by different ideologies. Now yes since plant life was spared there would be more to feed people with but in areas where most of the food comes from livestock there would probably be some starvation. Overall Thanos’ plan would fail if it was carried out in real life since it does nothing to delay climate change something that is more of a threat to humanity's survival than limited resources.
Really a solution better than Thanos’ is to better distribute resources since we already produce enough food to feed everyone but don’t distribute the food evenly. Now doing this will indeed take time but it is by far a better solution than the scheme of Thanos, which in truth is the easy way out.
