Positive, Like a Proton

Atoms consist of 3 different parts, protons, electrons, and neutrons. Today we will be discussing protons.

Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom and are positively charged. The amount of protons and electrons is equal unless the atom has become ionized, in which case the atom will have either more protons then electrons or more electrons than protons.

A singular proton has a mass of 1.67262192369(51)×10−27 kg and was first theorized in 1815 by William Prout. Protons are whats called Baryon Matter, baryon matter being any sub-atomic particle with an odd number of valance quarks. When two quarks come together, they form whats called a Hadron, Protons and Neutrons are the most stable.

Protons are made up of a type of particle called a quark, Quarks are a type of elementary particles that exist in 6 forms or spins, Up, down, strange, charm, bottom, and top. The combination of the six types of quarks is what determines weather a proton will be a proton, an electron will be an electron, and so forth. A proton has two up quarks and a down quark, an electron has one up quark and two down quarks.


Every particle has an anti-particle pair, the protons anti-particle is the Anti-proton. The electrons anti-particle is the positron, and the neutrons anti-particle is the anti-neutron, and last but not least, the neutrinos anti-particle is the anti-neutrino. as you may have already figured out, a lot of thought was put into naming the anti-particles, I mean after all, you cant come up with such striking, and creative names by just sticking anti in front of the particles name...right? (That was sarcasm)

Even elements on the periodic table have an anti-particle. observe, Anti-hydrogen!!! Anti-hydrogen is just made up of the anti-particles of its original constituents, in this case, Normal hydrogen is made of protons and electrons, anti-hydrogen is made up of anti-protons and positrons. This is the same for all other elements on the periodic table.

A bit off topic, photons, the photon is not made of protons, electrons, and neutrons, rather, the photon is merely electromagnetic energy. And in a strange twist of fate, is itself its own anti-particle. #MindBlown
